Heavy-Metal Vibrations

Twenty-eight puddles were chosen for water sampling in different locations of Antwerp. Selection criteria: a) different urban areas, b) colouration and, c) duration of wet state. Samples were analysed at the EcoSphere lab of the University of Antwerp. An elemental profile (fingerprint) was performed to check chemical condition, including a major and minor cation profile (Na, K, Ca, Mg, Al, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Ni, As, Cd, Pb) and a major anion profile (Cl, SO4, PO4, NO3, NO2, NH4). Values for each puddle were contrasted with European environmental quality standards for freshwater rivers and WHO drinking water, leading to only a few chemically stressed puddles. To visualize the unique profile of each puddle, values for each were charted on a logarithmic scale and contrasted with the found medians for each substance.

The exhibit showcases water from one to three puddles characterised by a relatively high presence of a heavy metal.

This installation covers the intricate connections between water bodies, heavy metals and urban landscapes.
